Takahiro Yamamoto

Dr. Takahiro Yamamoto is Assistant Professor of Cultural Economic History at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. He studies the history of modern Japan, focusing on its cross-border connections. His research interests include modern Japanese history, border history, mobility control and personal identification. His other publications include an edited volume “Documenting Mobility in the Japanese Empire and Beyond” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), and “Japan's passport system and the opening of borders, 1866-1878”, in: Historical Journal (2017). Prior to coming to Heidelberg, he held postdoctoral positions at The University of Tokyo and New York University Shanghai.
