English version:

The METROMOD research team is very pleased to announce the publication of its second major digital project: an online archive of artistic and intellectual exile in six global cities of arrival (Bombay, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, Shanghai).

The project METROMOD (Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile), funded by the ERC and based at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, conducts research on urban topographies – central and peripheral urban sites, (in)formal spaces of interaction and exchange. These urban sites are not only of particular importance for communication, networking, and theory-building, but are also relevant stops along the multiple paths of exile.

METROMOD thus realizes an online archive that includes not only prominent protagonists but also less recognized or well-known individuals. Each entry is linked to an address on a contemporary city map; these are residences, studios or other places of work. The spatio-temporal mapping can reveal networks and thus convey how the community of émigrés connected with the local art scene as well as with other METROMOD cities. Some of the archives contain entries written by both external and local authors, contributing to a plurality of voices and perspectives.

Because exile and migration involve dynamic movements and are documented in fragmentary ways, there was a deliberate intention to leave voids and ruptures visible in the entries. The curated archive thus encompasses a variety of different entries and is to be seen as a process of ongoing interdisciplinary research, The METROMOD team encourages researchers to contribute and expand the shared knowledge. Suggestions for missing or erroneous information are gratefully received.

METROMOD is indebted to all those who provided materials and documents in private and public archives, helped with references, and thus made significant contributions to the archive. The archive is based on the CMS/database nodegoat by LAB1100 and was designed in collaboration with Jamal Buscher (Bureau Johannes Erler) and programmed by LAB1100.
